The Far Corners

October 11, 2011

Travelling is a preoccupation that is as old as time itself. Humanity has always been on the move, for one reason or other. Because of travel, most of the world has already been visited and observed. It’s easy to believe that there are no longer any places that can deliver the thrill of first discovery. While it’s true that modern roads have reached many places, it’s surprising that the affinity most of us have with these destinations is often limited to the pictures and words that are used to depict them in blogs and guidebooks. In reality, not many would actually step off the beaten path and place their travel experience in the hands of serendipity. If we did this more often, we’d discover that there are, in fact, places that still defy the march of commercialized adventures and packaged tours. There’s nothing bad about enjoying the comforts of first class travel, on the contrary, it’s something that every traveller should aspire for, but we should also leave some space for some sense of discovery and wonder. If we do not, how else can we contribute to the grand tradition of human travel? Take some time to discover new places, taste new things, visit the far corners of the earth and see for yourself how immense the world really is. – Myles
